National Unity Platform (NUP) presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, has accused state (regime) security agencies of targeting him and frustrating his campaign in eastern Uganda, as he renews claims of a plot to kill him before the January 2026 elections.
Bobi Wine said his campaign team was on Wednesday blocked in Amuria District, where security personnel reportedly stopped them from accessing a hotel they had already booked and paid for. The team was forced to divert to Soroti, only to face another roadblock at Otuboi, where authorities again denied them entry into the city.
“We don’t know what they are planning now,” Bobi Wine said in a social media post, linking the incidents to his long-standing claims that President Yoweri Museveni’s government wants to eliminate him before voting day.
The opposition leader says the latest standoff is part of a wider pattern of harassment that has marked his campaign, including roadblocks, teargas, and violent confrontations in areas such as Gulu, Mukono and Kayunga. He described the campaign environment as a “war zone,” accusing the state of deliberately blocking opposition activities.
However, security agencies h issued a statement on the allegations saying that Bobi Wine declined to their guidance on the routes to use and instead parked his car ,stating his intention was to proceed to Amuria Town which the security agencies declined claiming that it was outside the authorized campaign time .
The human rights groups have continued to warn about growing political intimidation and limited freedoms as the country heads toward the 2026 polls.
Despite the setbacks, Bobi Wine says he will press on with his campaign, urging the international community to closely watch the situation and the threats he claims are being made against his life.
