Eddy Kenzo, president of the Uganda National Musicians’ Federation (UNMF), has provided an exciting update on the much-anticipated Copyright and Neighbouring Rights (Amendment) Bill, 2024.
In a statement shared on his social media platforms, Kenzo announced that the bill has reached an important milestone.
“I’m happy to inform you that the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights (Amendment) Bill, 2024, has successfully passed through the Parliamentary Counsel and received overwhelming support from the Cabinet today,” Kenzo wrote.
He went on to outline the next steps in the legislative process. The Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs will soon publish the bill in the Gazette before introducing it to Parliament for further debate and eventual enactment.
Moreover, the Ministry of Finance has issued a Certificate of Financial Implication to help accelerate the process.
Kenzo expressed optimism that this development could be a timely gift for Ugandan creatives, especially as the festive season approaches.
“It seems our wish of having the Copyright and Neighbouring Rights (Amendment) Bill, 2024, as a Christmas gift is coming true,” he added.
Kenzo concluded by thanking his supporters for their continued love, prayers, and encouragement throughout the process.
