The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC), led by Executive Director Nyombi Thembo, has announced that artists and events organisers will now be required to obtain permits before hosting concerts.

In a statement shared by UCC’s Head of Public and International Relations, Ibrahim Bbossa, it was confirmed that the permits will be issued directly by the Commission, he emphasized that the rule is clear

“No permit, no performance. If you’re organizing a public entertainment event, you MUST secure a permit from the Uganda Communications Commission.”

In addition, the UCC has instructed all broadcasters, including TV, radio, and online platforms, to halt the airing of songs with offensive or vulgar content. Bbossa cited specific songs such as Enkudi, Dooze, and others, which he said violate broadcasting standards and moral values.

A statement posted on the UCC website highlighted that, in accordance with the Uganda Communications Act of 2013, Section 31, Schedule 4 of the Minimum Broadcasting Standards, and the Uganda Communications (Content) Regulations of 2019, songs featuring profanity or explicit sexual content are strictly prohibited. As a result, the UCC has directed broadcasters to suspend songs like Enkudi, Dooze, Okwepiicha, Enyama, and Omunio by Lil Pazo and Gravity Omutuju until further notice.

The Commission has also expressed concern about the growing number of indecent and offensive performances by both local and international artists. “Some of these performances contain sexually explicit lyrics and suggestive dancing, which go against Uganda’s societal norms and cultural values, potentially threatening the moral fabric of the country,” the statement said.

The UCC reassured the public that it is collaborating with other stakeholders to ensure compliance with broadcasting standards and regulations, as well as to properly authorize concerts.
