The cremation and public viewing for the late veteran journalist Shaka Ssali will take place on Wednesday, April 9, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 9:00 PM at Jefferson Funeral Chapel, located at 5755 Castlewellan Dr., Alexandria, VA 22315.
This was confirmed by Sudhir Byaruhanga, an NTV Uganda journalist and a relative of the late Dr. Ssali.
Byaruhanga announced the details on social media as he invited family, friends, and well-wishers to join in paying their respects and celebrating his life.

Following the cremation, Shaka Ssali’s ashes will be transported to Uganda and other African nations, in accordance with his final wishes.
Dr. Shaka Ssali, the respected host of VOA’s Straight Talk Africa, passed away at the age of 71, just two weeks before his 72nd birthday. For over two decades, he hosted the program, interviewing African leaders, analysts, and ordinary citizens on important topics such as democracy, governance, and development.
Known for his deep commitment to press freedom, Dr. Ssali earned admiration throughout Africa and beyond for his unique and impactful interviewing style.
Born in Kabale, Uganda, he dedicated his career to truth, accountability, and the betterment of African society. His work inspired a generation of young Africans and played a pivotal role in shaping crucial conversations on the continent’s major issues.
Though his passing is a great loss to his family, friends, and millions of followers, Dr. Ssali’s enduring legacy in African journalism and public discourse will continue to influence future generations
Ssali began his career at VOA as a co-host of Africa World Tonight before becoming the host of Straight Talk Africa in 2000.
