Uganda Law Society Takes Government to Court Over ‘Unlawful Siege’ at Bobi Wine’s Home

In a bold move, the Uganda Law Society (ULS) has filed a lawsuit against the Ugandan government, condemning what they describe as an “illegal siege” at the home of National Unity Platform (NUP) leader, Robert Kyagulanyi, aka Bobi Wine.

The case, lodged on March 16 at Kasangati’s Chief Magistrate Court, takes aim at the government’s ongoing security operation at Kyagulanyi’s residence in Magere, Wakiso District.

The lawyers’ body accuses state security forces of surrounding Kyagulanyi’s home with armed personnel and deploying drones for surveillance actions they argue are clear violations of fundamental human rights.

They are calling for an immediate court order to withdraw all security forces, halt drone surveillance, and prevent future interference with Kyagulanyi’s family’s privacy and freedom.

ULS President Isaac Ssemakadde blasted the government, labeling the operation as unconstitutional and akin to house arrest without any legal basis. He emphasized, “This is unlawful, and there’s no justification for it under the law.”

Court documents reveal testimony from Kyagulanyi’s wife, Barbara, who shared disturbing details of the situation. She described constant drone flyovers, a heavy security presence during the night, and security forces attempting to access their property without consent creating an atmosphere of fear and distress.

This legal challenge comes as the security deployment continues even after Bobi Wine left Uganda following the controversial January 15 elections, where President Museveni was declared the winner. The ULS is calling on the court to act swiftly in defending the family’s constitutional rights against these unlawful actions.

Stay tuned for more updates on this high-stakes legal battle.
