TikToker Edward Awebwa Sentenced to 6 Years in Jail For Insulting President Museveni And His Family

Entebbe Chief Magistrate court yesterday meted out a 6 – year imprisonment to Tiktoker Edward Awebwa for insulting president Museveni , the First Lady, and the First son.

Awebwa’s troubles began when he posted a video on the “Save Media Uganda” platform, unleashing a torrent of vulgar and tribalistic remarks aimed at the first family. The clip, which quickly went viral, stirred public outrage and led to his swift arrest.

Awebwa Edward via his tiktok account brutally abused President Museveni, first Lady Janet Kataha and their son Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba through a series of video clips, in some he even promised to make them eat his Pupu,

The court’s decision to imprison Awebwa comes as no surprise, given the explicit nature of his statements and the growing trend of cracking down on digital hate speech. His sentence adds him to the list of content creators who have faced legal consequences for similar offenses in recent months.

Earlier this year, popular figure Pressure 24/7 was remanded on charges of offensive communication after allegedly insulting both the President and the Kabaka of Buganda. Another content creator, MC Chumi, faced comparable charges but was granted bail.

In 2022, TikToker Teddy Nalubowa also served time after being arrested for celebrating the death of General Elly Tumwine.

These cases underscore a stern warning to digital influencers about the repercussions of crossing the line into hate speech and offensive communication in Uganda.
