Media personality and Events host Sheilah Gashumba has spoken out about the financial struggles faced by TV presenters in Uganda, revealing that her early years in television left her disillusioned and underpaid.
Gashumba, who left her role at NTV Uganda in 2019, says she was earning just UGX 50,000 per show—an amount she described as unsustainable.
“It didn’t make any economic sense. “When you asked for a pay raise, it felt like they were doing you a favor”, she said during an appearance on Kauku Live.
After NTV, she joined NBS TV as part of the popular After 5 show, but later exited in November 2021 to pursue a role at NRG Radio Uganda.
In her candid interview, Sheilah didn’t hold back about the reality behind the glamorous image many TV presenters try to maintain.
“TV presenters are broke. They borrow clothes to appear well-dressed on screen.Sometimes, the only thing they actually own from their outfit is a pair of knickers. The people they borrow from even wait on set to take their clothes back immediately after the show.”,she said.

Despite stepping away from television, Sheilah Gashumba remains an influential figure in Uganda’s entertainment landscape. She continues to build her brand across various platforms, proving that her departure from TV was not an end, but a new beginning.
As Sheilah Gashumba carves her path forward, fans and industry watchers alike are eager to see where her talent and drive will take her next.
