Veteran journalist and former Voice of America TV host, Shaka Ssali had expressed a wish to be cremated, with his ashes sent back to Uganda and other African nations, a relative has revealed.
Sudir Byaruhanga, a journalist and distant relative of Shaka Ssali, shared this information on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “He had requested to be cremated, and his ashes sent back home and to other countries in Africa.”
Byaruhanga further confirmed that the family would honor Ssali’s wishes, and announced that details about his memorial services in Washington, D.C., and Uganda would be provided soon.

“We will respect his wishes, and the date for his send-off services in Washington, D.C., and Uganda will be communicated shortly. #RIPShakaSsali,” Byaruhanga wrote.
Ssali, who passed away last week at the age of 71, was widely admired for his incisive political commentary and his dedication to telling the stories of Africa. His show, which aired for over two decades, served as an influential platform for critical discussions, often bringing African leaders and intellectuals into dialogue while connecting the continent with the world.
His iconic opening line, “I’m profoundly honored and exceedingly humbled,” and his memorable phrase, “Let’s keep the African hope alive,” have become lasting parts of his legacy.
