The police in Kampala have launched an investigation into a tragic incident in which a police officer’s vehicle struck and killed the wife of a former government minister.
Florence Taka, wife of Julius Maganda, the former Minister of State for East African Affairs, was fatally injured in a collision on Sunday evening at Kitukutwe, along the Kiwologoma-Nakwero road in Wakiso District, part of the Greater Kampala Metropolitan Area.
According to Michael Kananura, the spokesperson for the Traffic Police, the accident involved a Toyota Harrier, with the deceased onboard, and a Toyota Premio driven by a police officer. Eyewitnesses reported that the Toyota Harrier had stopped on the roadside, and Florence Taka, the co-driver, had stepped out to load food purchased from a nearby stall.
The Toyota Premio, which was traveling in the same direction, lost control and crashed into the parked Harrier, pinning Taka between the two vehicles. Despite being rushed to the hospital, she later succumbed to her injuries.
The driver of the Premio, Constable Wilber Nuwagaba, and ASP Achilles Atwebembere, the Community Liaison Officer for Kira Division Police, were also in the vehicle. Both officers were injured in the crash and are currently receiving medical treatment.
Both vehicles have been taken to Kira Division Police Station for inspection as the investigation into the accident continues.
