The legal battle surrounding Dr. Kizza Besigye’s release took a dramatic twist when Judge Singizi Douglas ordered that the opposition leader be returned to prison due to concerns about his health.
The judge expressed worry over Besigye’s worsening condition, stating he could not continue with proceedings involving a sick prisoner who may collapse in court.
“This is an administrative decision. If a prisoner is ill, I cannot proceed with the case. He could faint,” Judge Singizi said before briefly adjourning the session.
Besigye, who has been on a hunger strike for several days in protest of his detention, has reportedly experienced serious health complications. His wife, Winnie Byanyima, had earlier disclosed that his kidneys were showing signs of damage.
His deteriorating health has sparked protests nationwide, with supporters in Mbarara, Bushenyi, and Kampala demanding his immediate release.
Despite his critical condition, the government has continued to detain Besigye, prompting his legal team to file for his urgent release.

The court is expected to reconvene shortly to hear the defense’s request for his freedom.
In the meantime, security forces have heightened their presence around the court, anticipating potential protests from Besigye’s supporters.
Kizza Besigye’s legal team argues that his continued detention without adequate medical care is a violation of his rights and is calling for an immediate ruling in his favor.

As the case unfolds, the future of one of Uganda’s most prominent opposition leaders remains uncertain, with human rights groups and activists closely monitoring whether the judiciary will grant him the critical medical attention he requires.
