Over the weekend, Eddy Kenzo-led Uganda National Musicians Federation (UNMF) held a high-profile event at Speke Resort Munyonyo to launch the “Yoweri” music album, a project rolled out ahead of the upcoming general elections.

The event, spearheaded by UNMF president Edrisa Musuuza alias Eddy Kenzo, was presided by President Yoweri Museveni and First Lady Janet Museveni. It also attracted several cabinet ministers, key industry stakeholders, and a number of artists.

However, the absence of some prominent musiciansbparticularly those who are part of the UNMF leadership such as Pallaso, Sheebah, and Gravity Omutujju,Bebe Cool did not go unnoticed. Their no-show sparked questions, especially since no official reasons were initially provided.

Addressing the media after the event, “Sitya Loss” hit maker clarified that their absences were not due to any form of protest or division within the federation.

Eddy Kenzo explained that the launch took place on a Saturday, a day many artists had already committed to other performances and shows.

“It was a Saturday, and some artists had shows booked in advance stressing that their absence wasn’t intentional”,Eddy Kenzo said.

He went on to highlight the reasons why the federation has chosen to collaborate closely with the government, noting that the industry had been losing out by operating in a fragmented and unstructured manner.

“As musicians, we decided to form a federation and work with the government because we were losing a lot,” he explained.

Kenzo also acknowledged that some artists, himself included, support President Museveni due to the stability he has maintained in the country.

“One of the main reasons some of us support President Museveni is the security he has ensured in Uganda,” he added.

The UNMF, launched in 2023 under Kenzo’s leadership, now serves as the official umbrella body for musicians in Uganda. It aims to foster a united front for industry development and better engagement with the government.

In recognition of these efforts, the Ugandan government has started extending direct support to the federation. In the recently approved 2026/27 national budget, Parliament allocated Shs 33 billion to the UNMF SACCO. This funding is intended to offer loans, grants, and financial support to help artists enhance their careers and sustain their livelihoods.

The government has also continued to support the creative sector through various other initiatives.

During the event, President Museveni urged musicians to make use of these opportunities to grow both their talent and financial independence. He also encouraged them to use their platforms to promote unity and national development.

The Yoweri album launch is being seen not just as a cultural event, but also as a significant political gesture highlighting the increasing role of the creative industry in Uganda’s national development strategy.
