The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially set March 13, 2025, as the date for the by-election to fill the vacant Kawempe North Parliamentary seat.
This seat became available following the death of Muhammad Ssegirinya, who passed away earlier this month at Lubaga Hospital after an extended illness.
During a press briefing on Monday at Tick Hotel in Kawempe, EC Chairperson Simon Byabakama outlined the schedule for the electoral process, which will begin this week across 197 polling stations in the constituency.
According to the tentative timeline, candidate nominations will take place from February 26 to February 27, 2025. Paper inspections will be held from February 27 to March 5, followed by a campaign period from February 28 to March 11.
Byabakama also highlighted that individuals wishing to serve as election observers must apply for approval from the EC ahead of the election.
“The Commission welcomes any proposals aimed at ensuring the process remains free and fair,” he stated.
He also emphasized that following electoral laws and guidelines is crucial for the integrity of the election.
Henry Makabai, the returning officer for Kawempe North, will oversee the by-election, with Rehema Nassuna serving as the assistant returning officer.
The EC chairperson urged all stakeholders, including candidates, to maintain calm and refrain from voter bribery, stressing the importance of a peaceful, free, and fair election.

“We all have a role to play in ensuring the success of this election,” Byabakama concluded.
