Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has sparked heated debate after weighing in on the escalating Middle East conflict calling for peace, but firmly stating Uganda would stand with Israel if its survival is threatened.

Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Muhoozi said Uganda would fight “on the side of Israel” in the event of an existential threat. He also recently paid tribute to Yoni Netanyahu, the Israeli commander killed during the historic Entebbe rescue.

Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba,

His remarks come at a tense moment, following fresh missile strikes by Iran on Israel a development that has raised fears of a wider regional conflict.

Uganda’s current stance marks a stark contrast to the 1970s, when relations with Israel collapsed under Idi Amin. Today, under President Yoweri Museveni, ties between Kampala and Tel Aviv have grown steadily stronger.

The two countries now cooperate in areas such as military training, intelligence sharing, and defense support partnerships that analysts say have helped strengthen Uganda’s security capabilities.

Back in Uganda, Muhoozi’s statement has ignited a wave of reactions.

Supporters see it as a bold show of leadership and global relevance. Critics, however, argue it shifts focus away from domestic issues, including ongoing political debates tied to Museveni’s long rule.

Online, the conversation is growing fast drawing thousands of reactions ranging from solidarity messages to sharp criticism, reflecting the country’s divided political landscape.

With tensions in the Middle East still rising, Muhoozi’s comments signal a more outspoken and assertive foreign policy posture from Uganda.
