Police have launched a search for popular TikTok content creator Hellen Nakimaanya alias Auntie Kaduuka Clowie, who is facing charges of “obtaining money by false pretenses.”
Authorities suspect that Nakimaanya, who is believed to have fled the country, has gone into hiding.
Luke Owoyesigire, the Deputy Police Spokesperson for Kampala Metropolitan, confirmed that investigations are underway and that Immigration authorities are being consulted to confirm her location.
“The latest information suggests she has fled the country, but we are working on verifying this through Immigration,” Owoyesigire said.
Nakimaanya is accused of defrauding at least 10 victims, primarily Ugandans living abroad, with reports filed at Bweyogerere Police Station. However, police believe there could be additional victims who have reported similar cases at other stations.
Many of her victims are reportedly based in the UAE, and some have already engaged local lawyers to take legal action against her.
Owoyesigire urged the public to be cautious when dealing with strangers, particularly when large sums of money are involved, especially for business ventures in Uganda.
“Why would you trust someone you don’t know with money, especially when you’re not even in the country?” he questioned.
Nakimaanya is accused of taking advantage of her reputation as a trustworthy intermediary for Ugandans abroad who wanted to start small businesses back home. Initially, she successfully used the funds sent by her clients to establish ventures such as charcoal stalls, chapati stands, and even purchase land. To build trust, she shared videos showcasing the progress of these businesses.
However, problems arose when complaints surfaced, claiming that Nakimaanya stopped fulfilling her promises. Victims allege she misappropriated their funds, leaving them without the businesses they had paid for or a refund.
Owoyesigire further warned Ugandans living abroad about the dangers of sending money to strangers for business purposes.
“You trust strangers with money to start a business, yet you wouldn’t even trust your own relatives with the same amount. This has to stop,” he emphasized.
Police are actively collaborating with Immigration to locate Nakimaanya and are urging other potential victims to come forward with their complaints. The investigation is ongoing.
