The Electoral Commission boss justice Simon Byabakama has called for an urgent investigation into Saturday’s violent clashes in Gulu, where security officers and street gangs allegedly attacked the campaign team of NUP presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine.

In a toughly worded statement, EC Chairperson Byabakama blasted the violent scenes, saying it was disappointing especially after the Commission had just held a harmonization meeting with all candidates’ agents and security officials on proper campaign conduct.

Byabakama stressed that every presidential candidate has a constitutional right to move freely and seek votes as long as they follow EC guidelines, and warned against treating any candidate as though they are breaking laws they haven’t violated.

He urged security agencies to stop the violent confrontations and choose dialogue whenever disagreements arise.

The EC further reminded security operatives to enforce campaign rules with professionalism, restraint, and humanity.

EC spokesperson Julius Mucunguzi also appealed to candidates, supporters, and security forces to maintain peace as campaigns continue.

At least five NUP supporters were injured during the Gulu chaos, where gangs armed with sticks reportedly descended on Kyagulanyi’s convoy, vandalising cars, sound equipment, and scattering supporters.

Bobi Wine condemned the attacks, accusing the state of enabling violence against his campaign adding that the Gulu incident followed an earlier alleged military raid on the NUP office in the city.

“They deployed goons who beat up our people, raided our venue, vandalised our sound system and stole several items,” Kyagulanyi said.
