NRM’s Faridah Nambi Returns to Court Over Kawempe North By-Election Loss

Faridah Nambi, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate in the recent Kawempe North by-election, has launched a fresh legal challenge against the victory of Elias Nalukoola from the National Unity Platform (NUP).

This latest move comes just weeks after Nambi withdrew a previous request for a vote recount, surprising many observers and adding a new twist to the ongoing political saga in Kawempe North.

At the time, her legal team, Atwijukire Dennis Advocates, explained that the recount request had become “overtaken by events” since Nalukoola’s win had already been officially gazetted by the Electoral Commission.

The new petition was lodged to High Court on Friday by her legal team Crane Associated Advocates.

In her new petition, Nambi alleges that the Electoral Commission failed to tally results from 14 polling stations, potentially disenfranchising over 16,000 voters. She also accuses Nalukoola of committing electoral offenses, including voter bribery and campaigning on election day.

“We intend to prove that the irregularities and illegal acts were substantial enough to warrant an annulment of the results,” stated Crane Associated Advocates, who are now representing Nambi. The legal team confirmed they will formally serve the petition to both the Electoral Commission and Nalukoola.

Faridah Nambi’s renewed legal effort contrasts with her recent public statements, where she appeared to shift focus to the 2026 general elections. Speaking on NBS TV’s Frontline, she had expressed intentions to contest again rather than pursue further court action.

However, this new petition signals that neither Faridah Nambi nor the NRM is ready to concede defeat. The case is expected to reignite political tensions and legal debates in Kawempe North, a constituency widely seen as a NUP stronghold.

Nalukoola, a prominent opposition lawyer, has yet to respond publicly, though his legal team is expected to vigorously challenge the allegations once served.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission faces increasing scrutiny for its handling of the disputed polling stations. Questions remain over why votes from the 14 stations were left unaccounted for in the final tally.
