The Uganda Railways Corporation (URC) has announced the appointment of Benon Kajuna as its new Managing Director.
He succeeds David Musoke Bulega, who had served as acting MD for over a year.
Kajuna brings 24 years of extensive experience in transport management, having previously held the role of Director of Transport.
His appointment follows a rigorous interview process held last year, culminating in his official swearing-in on Friday, 31 January 2025.

During a formal handover at the Ministry of Works and Transport headquarters, Kajuna transferred the instruments of service to Permanent Secretary Bageya Waiswa.
Having dedicated much of his career to Uganda’s transport sector, Kajuna has played a pivotal role in its development. He served as Director of Transport since 2015, contributing significantly to shaping national and regional transport policies.
With a background that spans three decades in transport planning and management at various levels, Kajuna is well-equipped to lead URC.
He holds an MBA from the Eastern and Southern African Management Institute (ESAMI) and a Master’s in Economic Policy Management from Makerere University. He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (FCILT).
Kajuna’s appointment comes at a challenging time for the railway sector, with reports highlighting compatibility issues between Uganda’s aging railway infrastructure and newly acquired locomotives worth UGX 48 billion.
Despite these challenges, Kajuna’s vast experience in strategic planning, project management, and railway development positions him well to navigate these hurdles and steer Uganda Railways towards greater efficiency and success.
