Uganda’s national football team, the Cranes, secured their spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following South Sudan’s dramatic 3-2 win over Congo in Juba today .

In a tense match at Juba Stadium, South Sudan’s striker, Data Elly, scored the crucial goal in the 85th minute, ensuring Uganda’s qualification and easing the pressure ahead of their upcoming clash with South Africa.

The game between South Sudan and Congo was a thrilling back-and-forth affair. Congo initially went ahead in the 26th minute thanks to a goal from forward Cédric Ibayi, who doubled his tally just nine minutes later.

But South Sudan quickly responded, with Ezibon Wajo netting two goals before halftime to level the score at 2-2.

Congo’s hopes of regaining control took a blow when defender Berthrand Passi was shown a red card in the 78th minute, leaving the Congolese side a man down. South Sudan capitalized on the advantage, and Elly, coming off the bench, scored the decisive goal in the 85th minute to secure the win.

As a result, Uganda and South Africa—who currently lead Group K—are both assured of their places in the 2025 AFCON tournament in Morocco.

Congo’s defeat ended their qualification hopes, leaving them eliminated from contention.

With their qualification now secured, the Cranes will face South Africa at home in Namboole on Friday, with both teams vying for first place in the group but with the comfort of knowing their AFCON tickets are already booked.
