Some Of The Companies Owned By The Government In Uganda

There are several companies in Uganda both Private and some are owned by the government. The following are some of the companies that are owned, run and controlled by the Ugandan Government.

1. Uganda Broadcasting Corporation 

Founded on 8th October 1963, also popularly known as UBC, the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation which was formerly known as Radio Uganda, is the public broadcaster network of Uganda.

It was founded as a result of the Uganda Broadcasting Corporation Act 2004, which merged the operations of Uganda Television(UTV) and Radio Uganda. It started broadcasting on 16th November 2005.

 

2. Uganda Development Bank Limited

It is the Country’s National Finance Institution with the mandate to accelerate socio-economic development in Uganda through sustainable financial interventions.

The Bank is believed to support projects within the private sector that demonstrate a potential to deliver high socio-economic value in terms of job creation, improved production output tax contribution and foreign exchange generation.

It was founded in 1972 and located on the first floor at Rwenzori Towers on Nakasero road.

 

3. Uganda National Airlines

Founded on 30th January 2018, and started operating on 28th August 2019, Uganda Airlines is Uganda’s flag carrier which is also a revival of the older Uganda Airlines which operated from 1977 until 2001.

4. National Social Security Funds 

With its Headquarters on the 14th floor, worker’s House, the Quasi government company was founded in 1985 and it is responsible for the collection, safekeeping, responsible investment and distribution of retirement funds from employees of the private sector in Uganda who are not covered by the Government retirement scheme.

 

5. Uganda Standard Gauge Railway

A planned Railway system linking Iganda ti the neighboring countries of Kenya, Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda and Sudan as part of the East African Railway Master Plan.

This new standard gauge railway is also meant to replace the old inefficient meter gauge Railway system.

6. Uganda Refinery Holding Company

It is a Ugandan Government owned Parastatal company which is 100 percwnt subsidiary of the Uganda National Oil Company whose purpose is to hold the shareholding in the Uganda refinery and related infrastructure that is assigned to the Ugandan government.

With the above mentioned government companies, the Ugandan government has played a pivotal role towards their development and also helped to cub unemployment through providing jobs to the citizens.
