Earlier this month, Renowned Ugandan Islamic scholar and da’wah activist Sheikh Burhan Kiti stirred controversy after publicly criticizing the veneration of the Uganda Martyrs by Christian believers, calling their actions misguided.
Speaking at a public event, Sheikh Kiti questioned the annual pilgrimage to Namugongo, where thousands of Christians gather to honor the martyrs as heroes of faith.
His comments sparked widespread backlash, with many Christians expressing anger over what they saw as disrespectful and demeaning language.
In the wake of the uproar, some critics went as far as urging Sheikh Kiti to return a vehicle he had received through a social media fundraiser organized by musician King Saha.
Responding to the backlash, Sheikh Burhan Kiti issued a public apology. He clarified that his intention was not to insult or discredit the Christian community but rather to offer what he viewed as sincere advice.

“I want to apologize for the remarks I made earlier. It was never my intention to disrespect people or any religion. I have many Christian and Catholic friends. My goal was to advise, not demean. I sincerely apologize to anyone who was hurt by my words.”,” he said in a video that has since gone viral online.
Beyond his role as a religious figure, Sheikh Kiti is also known for his outspoken views on political and social issues, particularly for his criticism of government injustices.
