Dr. Tanga Odoi, Chairman of the NRM Electoral Commission, has expressed strong confidence that the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) will emerge victorious in the upcoming Kawempe North by-election, despite growing concerns about the role of security forces in the electoral process.

Speaking about the election, Dr. Odoi said, “NRM is going to win in Kawempe. While the mistakes being made by the police might give the opposition a slight advantage, when you speak to neutral observers, we are clearly in the lead.”

He also issued a warning to independent candidates who may attempt to use NRM symbols, emphasizing that such actions could confuse voters and mislead the public.

The by-election, scheduled for March 13, 2025, comes after the death of former MP Muhammad Ssegirinya. The nomination process has been marred by incidents of violence and accusations of human rights abuses, adding to the tense atmosphere surrounding the race.

Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Thomas Tayebwa, has strongly condemned reports of torture and intimidation, labeling those responsible as “enemies of the state.”

The presence of the Joint Anti-Terrorism Taskforce (JATT) in Kawempe has sparked controversy, with reports of masked and armed operatives using excessive force, particularly during the nomination of NUP candidate Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola. Kira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, along with other stakeholders, has raised questions about the role of these security forces in the by-election.

Despite the unrest, NRM’s candidate, Faridah Nambi, has been energetically campaigning, focusing on rallying support from women and youth. She has emphasized the NRM’s record on peace and development, urging party members to stay united in their efforts to secure a win.
