Singer-turned-politician Stecia Mayanja left many Ugandans stunned over the weekend when she took to the stage at a National Resistance Movement (NRM) event held at Kololo Independence Grounds.
The performance raised eyebrows across the political spectrum, especially since Mayanja currently serves as president of the opposition-leaning National Peasants Party (NPP) a position she assumed just a few months ago.
Energetic and visibly cheerful, Mayanja entertained the crowd with a string of her hit songs, appearing unfazed by the controversy brewing online. Her presence at an event hosted by a rival political party prompted immediate reactions on social media.
“How does the president of an opposition party end up performing at an NRM function?” one user questioned on X (formerly Twitter).
Another TikTok user, however, was more understanding: “The bag has to be secured,” they quipped, suggesting the move was financially motivated. Others speculated that the singer might be fundraising for her political campaigns.
“She probably needed the cash to campaign for NPP,” joked X user Vincent Tumusiime, echoing the views of several amused observers.
