Nyendo-Mukungwe MP Mathias Mpuuga has declared plans to sue National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi, known as Bobi Wine, over accusations linking him to political violence in Greater Masaka.

Speaking at a press conference in Masaka, the former Leader of the Opposition strongly denied any involvement in human rights abuses and dismissed the claims as false and politically driven.

The dispute follows recent remarks by NUP leaders suggesting that Mpuuga failed to support victims of the 2021/22 machete attacks in Masaka, which left more than 30 people dead.

He was also accused of neglecting his duties as opposition leader during the crisis. These allegations have deepened internal divisions within Uganda’s main opposition party.

In his defense, Mpuuga outlined his support efforts for the victims and visits to detained MPs Allan Ssewanyana and Muhammad Segirinya, who face treason charges.

He condemned the accusations as deliberate attempts to damage his reputation, saying, “Instead of fighting regime oppression, our leaders are spreading lies to discredit their own.”

Mpuuga revealed that his legal team is preparing to file a defamation suit against Kyagulanyi, asserting his resolve to remain active in leadership despite party tensions.

He pledged continued service to his constituents and dismissed the allegations as intimidation tactics.

Political observers see the clash as a sign of growing cracks within NUP as it gears up for the 2026 elections.

The dispute unfolds amid lingering security concerns in Masaka, where the machete attacks targeted opposition supporters. While arrests were made, many within the opposition believe the violence was politically motivated.

Mpuuga still holds strong grassroots support in Masaka, a factor that may complicate NUP’s efforts to maintain party unity.

As of now, the NUP leadership has not publicly responded to Mpuuga’s legal threat. Analysts warn that the escalating infighting could weaken the opposition’s momentum against the ruling NRM party at a crucial time.

The political standoff remains unresolved, with attention now focused
