Busiro County East MP, Hon. Medard Lubega Ssegona, has stirred tension within the National Unity Platform (NUP) after publicly declaring himself the party’s future president once Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, completes his alleged two-term leadership by 2030.

Speaking to his constituents, Lubega Ssegona stated that there was a mutual agreement within the party for Bobi Wine to serve only two terms.

“When Kyagulanyi’s two terms, which we mutually agreed upon as the leader of NUP, come to a close, the next president will be from Busiro, and that will be me,” he declared.

Bobi Wine assumed NUP leadership in 2020, which would mean the end of his second term in 2030. Ssegona’s announcement has not only shocked NUP supporters but also sparked fierce backlash from party loyalists and fans of Bobi Wine, many of whom see the party and its founder as inseparable.

Critics argue that Lubega Ssegona’s bold declaration is premature and undermines the party’s unity. His close association with former NUP deputy president Hon. Mathias Mpuuga who fell out with the party over corruption allegations has further fueled skepticism about his intentions and loyalty.

Although Ssegona kept a low profile during the fallout between Mpuuga and NUP, his ties to the embattled former leader raise questions about his current standing within the party.

Despite the criticism, Ssegona remains confident in his vision, positioning himself as the natural successor to Bobi Wine when the time comes.
