The ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry ,and Fisheries has announced a quarantine on the slaughter, sale and movement of cattle in Kampala District following the outbreak of foot-and- mouth disease.
This comes after an outbreak of FMD in Kabowa, Rubaga division in Kampala
In the statement addressed to the chief Administrative officer , Kampala Capital City Authority ( KCCA) from Anna Rose Ademum, commissioner of Animal Health at Ministry of Agriculture , emphasized the necessary of these measures to curb the further spread of the disease.
“The district has been placed under quarantine as per the Animal Disease Act, capt 38,” the statement reads in part.
She adds that movement of cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and their by-products to, through, or within the district has been prohibited until further notice.
Livestock markets, slaughter places, including butcheries, loading grounds and animal shows in the entire district are hereby closed with immediate effect,” the statement reads further.
Cattle markets serve as crucial hubs for trade and commerce, and their closure has already begun to impact the livelihoods of numerous farmers and traders who depend on these markets for their income.
The foot and mouth disease primarily affects cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, sheep, and pigs.
The disease is characterized by fever, blister-like sores on the mouth and feet, and a subsequent decrease in milk and meat production.
