Faridah Nambi, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate in the Kawempe North by-election, has decided to withdraw her petition that sought a recount of votes.

Nambi had initially filed a petition with the Kawempe Chief Magistrate’s Court requesting a vote recount after the National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate, Nalukoola Luyimbazi, was declared the winner of the election.

However, in a letter to the Chief Magistrate on March 25, Nambi, through her legal team at Atwijukire Dennis Advocates, stated that the petition had become irrelevant, as the Electoral Commission had already officially published the results, confirming Nalukoola Luyimbazi as the winner.

“We have instructions from the applicant to withdraw the above application. The Electoral Commission has already gazetted Mr. Elias Nalukoola, and so the application has been overtaken by events,” the letter read.

On March 24, the Electoral Commission officially gazetted the results of the Kawempe North by-election, confirming Luyimbazi’s victory.

The withdrawal marks a concession from Faridah Nambi and her party, ending their 10-day challenge to overturn the election results in court.
