The 2026 Nebbi District Woman MP race has taken a dramatic twist after the Electoral Commission nullified the nomination of NUP’s Mercy Rebecca Abedican, paving the way for Minister Phiona Nyamutoro to sail through unopposed.
According to an EC ruling issued on November 13, 2025, chairperson Justice Simon Byabakama revealed that Abedican’s nomination was defective after her two seconders Godfrey Ongiera and Jimmy Bediic denied ever signing her endorsement forms.

The Commission noted that this violation of nomination requirements made Abedican ineligible to contest.
“The Commission resolved that candidate Abedican Mercy Rebecca was not eligible for nomination… since she failed to comply with the required provisions of the law,” Justice Byabakama stated.
With Abedican out, Nyamutoro who earlier trounced Agnes Acibu in the NRM primaries remains the only candidate standing.

The EC has now directed that she be declared elected unopposed, reversing the earlier decision by the Nebbi Returning Officer.
“Candidate Phiona Nyamutoro is to be declared elected unopposed as Woman Member of Parliament for Nebbi District,” the letter referenced LEG 75/79/01 reads in part.
The formal announcement will be made in Nebbi District on November 17, 2025.
