EC Launches National Voters’ Register Update Exercise

The Electoral Commission (EC) has officially launched the General Update of the National Voters’ Register in preparation for the 2025-2026 General Elections.

The update exercise began on 20th January and will run through 10th February 2025.

This update will be conducted at designated update stations across Uganda’s 10,717 parishes and wards. The stations will operate daily, from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, including weekends. Specific locations will be announced in advance.

Julius Mucunguzi, Head of Public Relations at the EC, explained that the purpose of the exercise is to allow eligible Ugandan citizens aged 18 and older, who are not yet registered, to enroll as voters. Additionally, it provides an opportunity for registered voters wishing to transfer their voting location to apply for such changes.

“Mucunguzi emphasized that individuals who are already registered as voters do not need to re-register. They can instead use the update exercise to verify that their details are correct and reflect accurately on the Voters’ Register at their chosen voting location,” he said.

Furthermore, students who have reached the age of 18 and were registered by the National Identification and Registration Authority (NIRA) will be able to update their information, including their National Identification Number (NIN), and confirm their polling station within their parish of residence or origin.

The EC will also update several specialized voter registers during this exercise, including:

The National Youth Voters’ Register for the election of Youth Councils and Committees.

The National PWDs Voters’ Register for the election of PWD Councils and Committees.

The National Older Persons Voters’ Register for the election of Older Persons Councils and Committees.

The deadline for voter registration is 10th February 2025. After this date, no further voter registrations or transfers between polling stations will be accepted.

“Please ensure that applications for registration or transfer are completed before the cut-off date,” Mucunguzi added.
