Thomas Tayebwa, the deputy Speaker of parliament has broken his silence over social media claims linking him to the recent demolition of structures around St. Balikuddembe Market, commonly known as Owino Market.

In a statement released on Thursday 12th March ,2026, the Deputy Speaker confirmed that he legally acquired a lease for a plot in the Nakivubo area in 2018 after following all formal procedures and paying the required fees like any other citizen.

However, when he later submitted building plans for approval, Kampala Capital City Authority informed him that the land was needed for strategic public projects. The authority subsequently compensated him and took possession of the land about three years ago.

Tayebwa emphasized that he no longer owns the land and has no interest or control over it.

“I have no legal claim to that plot today. Therefore, there is absolutely no basis for me to evict anyone or participate in any demolition on land that does not belong to me,” he said.

The legislator also addressed allegations that he acquired the land due to his current position as Deputy Speaker, noting that the lease was secured years before he assumed the role.

While expressing sympathy for vendors affected by the demolition, Tayebwa maintained that he had no involvement in the events that unfolded around the market.

He reiterated his commitment to transparency and the rule of law.
