CID Chief Set to Reveal Key Leads in Joan Kagezi’s Murder

Maj. Tom Magambo, head of the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID), announced his intention to brief President Museveni on the individuals behind the assassination of prosecutor Joan Kagezi.

During the 7th Joan Kagezi Memorial Lecture at Kololo Ceremonial Grounds, attended by President Museveni, Magambo hinted at forthcoming revelations regarding the financiers of Kagezi’s killers.

Kagezi, the Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, was fatally shot in Kiwatule on March 30, 2015, by unidentified assailants on a motorcycle while she paused at a fruit stand.

Although Magambo refrained from divulging specifics, he assured attendees that the police would eventually unveil the backers of the assassins.

President Museveni, present at the lecture, probed Magambo for updates, emphasizing the importance of resolving the case.

Magambo’s reference to President Museveni as a “lead investigator” drew amusement from the audience, as he pledged to meet the president for further guidance at an appropriate juncture.

Museveni acknowledged that some suspects were apprehended, while others met their demise in the Democratic Republic of Congo under the Allied Democratic Forces’ banner.

The suspects, including Daniel Kisekka Kiwanuka and Nasur Abdallah Mugonole, await trial following their arraignment in November 2023.

Reflecting on Kagezi’s legacy, Museveni emphasized the importance of commemorating those who serve their duties with distinction, underscoring the need to support their families.

Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny-Dollo emphasized the presumption of innocence and due process for the suspects, reassuring that justice would prevail.

Director of Public Prosecutions Jane Frances Abodo highlighted resource constraints hindering their mandate, stressing the need for additional prosecutors and enhanced security for judicial officers.

Abodo also flagged the surge in land-related crimes and urged prompt action to address them, reminding President Museveni of his commitment to supporting the Prosecutor’s Sacco.
