Makerere University Guild President Churchill Ssentamu, who is also a nephew to Bobi Wine, the NUP party president  and son to Fred Nyanzi, has spoken out about his decision to contest for Youth MP Central Region as an independent candidate.

Many expected Ssentamu to run under the National Unity Platform (NUP), given his strong family ties to the party. However, he chose not to use the NUP symbols or colors on his campaign materials  a move that has sparked public discussion.

Speaking on Sanyuka TV on Wednesday , Ssentamu said his decision was intentional and meant to promote unity among the youth, regardless of their political backgrounds.

“Yes, there’s an umbrella, but I want to be seen as a tent that brings everyone together  even those of the bus (NRM) and keys (FDC). The goal is to take the youth in the right direction,” he said.

Ssentamu’s campaign posters feature orange, blue, and red colors, instead of the usual NUP red. He explained that each color choice carries a message of inclusiveness and harmony.

“My words are in orange, my coat is blue, and my tie is red. It’s about unity, not party colors,” he added.

This isn’t the first time Ssentamu has chosen to stand independently. During the Makerere Guild elections, he also ran as an independent candidate despite his family’s political influence.

Now eyeing a national role, Ssentamu says his mission is to unite all Ugandan youth and be recognized as a leader for everyone, not just those from one political party.
