In a surprising turn of events, National Unity Platform (NUP) president Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, shared a seat and a handshake with his political rival, Nyendo-Mukungwe MP Mathias Mpuuga, during the Kabaka’s birthday Thanksgiving mass held at Rubaga Cathedral on Sunday.

The unexpected display of unity between the two leaders, who have had a strained relationship in recent years, caught the attention of many attendees and sparked widespread speculation about the future of opposition politics in Uganda.

The mass, held to celebrate the birthday of Kabaka Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, attracted a wide range of dignitaries and faithful from across the country.

But it was the sight of Bobi Wine and Mpuuga seated side by side, briefly conversing and participating in the service, that drew the most attention.

Their fallout became public in 2024 when Bobi Wine suspended Mpuuga from his position as NUP Deputy President for Central Region over allegations of corruption linked to a UGX 500 million “service award” he received while serving as Leader of the Opposition in Parliament. Mpuuga denied any wrongdoing and reaffirmed his loyalty to the party.

While Sunday’s interaction may not confirm a full reconciliation, it was a significant gesture, especially at such a culturally important event. Political observers see it as a potential first step toward healing divisions within the opposition as the 2026 general elections approach.

The Kabaka’s birthday celebrations often serve as a unifying platform for leaders from various political affiliations, and this year’s event may have offered an opportunity for bridge-building between the two influential figures within NUP.
