Veteran political figure Dr. Kizza Besigye and his associate Hajji Obeid Lutale are scheduled to appear before the General Court Martial in Makindye today.
The court will review the legality of the charges against them and address questions regarding its jurisdiction, particularly since their arrests occurred in Kenya.
Their previous appearance was on December 2, 2024, when proceedings were delayed after it was revealed that their lead Kenyan lawyer, Martha Karua, did not have a practicing certificate from the Uganda Law Council, a requirement for attorneys representing clients in Ugandan courts.
Dr. Besigye and Lutale were arrested on November 20, 2024, at Nairobi’s Riverside Hotel and charged with the unlawful possession of two pistols and live ammunition.
Authorities claim these offenses were committed during meetings in Athens, Greece; Geneva, Switzerland; and Nairobi, Kenya, where they allegedly sought logistical support and identified military targets in Uganda to destabilize national security.
Both Besigye and Lutale have denied the charges and remain in detention at Luzira Prison while investigations by the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) continue.
