Local comedian Allan Mujuni, known as Amooti Omubalanguzi, has paid tribute to his former colleague and friend, Nicholas Mpairwe, aka Messe Bontwe.
The entertainment industry was left reeling after the shocking news of Messe Bontwe’s death, which was confirmed yesterday.
He passed away from a heart attack in the United States, just one day before Amooti’s highly anticipated concert celebrating 25 years in the industry.
Amooti, visibly shaken, spoke about the news, expressing his disbelief. He revealed that he had been in regular contact with Messe, who had even promised to surprise him during the concert. Amooti now believes that the tragic news itself may have been the surprise Messe had planned.
“I was in total shock when I heard the news. At first, I didn’t believe it. I even cursed the first three people who called me to say he had died. But when reliable sources started confirming it, I knew it was true. Messe and I had been talking, and he even mentioned that he had a surprise for me at the concert. I kept wondering if he was going to get me a car or a piece of land, but I guess this is the surprise,” Amooti shared.
The comedian also admitted to considering postponing the concert due to the tragic loss but was urged by friends and fans to continue with the event.
“Initially, I thought of canceling or postponing the concert, but my friends and fans encouraged me to go ahead with it,” he added.
It’s worth noting that Messe had been living in the US for the past decade and had withdrawn from the comedy scene, with many fans not hearing from him for years.
