South Africa ended Uganda’s unbeaten streak with a 2-0 victory on Friday, November 15, 2024, at the Mandela National Stadium in Kampala during the penultimate round of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

Despite the defeat, Uganda remains in contention to finish strong in the group, with a crucial match against Congo scheduled for Tuesday, November 19. Meanwhile, South Africa will host South Sudan in Johannesburg.

The first half was evenly matched, with both teams struggling to create clear-cut chances. Uganda midfielder Taddeo Lwanga was booked in the 42nd minute, but neither side was able to capitalize on the few opportunities they had before the break.

South Africa came out strong in the second half, and their substitutions proved to be the difference. Thapelo Morena, who was brought on at halftime, put the visitors ahead in the 49th minute with a well-placed shot.

Uganda responded with attacking changes of their own, introducing Steven Mukwala and Bobosi Byaruhanga in the 56th minute. However, their efforts to break down South Africa’s defense were unsuccessful.

As the match neared its conclusion, South Africa sealed the win with a second goal in the 89th minute. Pule Maswanganyi found the back of the net after a clever assist from Iqraam Rayners, ensuring all three points for his side.

Both teams have already secured their spots at the 2025 AFCON finals, but the battle for group leadership is still in play. South Africa, unbeaten and top of the group, will look to finish the qualifiers on a high when they face South Sudan. Uganda, currently second, will aim to bounce back and secure the points needed against Congo to solidify their standing.

The final round of Group K matches will determine the final standings, with both South Africa and Uganda aiming to carry momentum into the continental tournament.
