Abubakar Lawal, a forward for Uganda Premier League leaders Vipers, tragically passed away in a road accident.
The Nigerian born striker died early Monday morning following a crash on Entebbe Road in Kampala, as confirmed by the club.
“We are heartbroken to announce the untimely death of our cherished player, Abubakar Lawal, who tragically passed away this morning,” Vipers said in a statement.
“His body has been moved to a medical facility for a post-mortem. We will share funeral details as soon as they are available. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lawal’s family, friends, and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.”

Lawal, 29, joined Vipers in July 2022 from Rwandan club AS Kigali, where he had played for two years. Last season, he featured in 24 matches across both the league and the CAF Champions League, scoring five goals, including Vipers’ first-ever goal in the group stages against Raja Casablanca.
Before his stint at AS Kigali, Lawal played for Nasarawa United in Nigeria.
Just three days prior to his death, Lawal was an unused substitute during Vipers’ Uganda Cup victory over Mbarara City.

In the wake of his passing, both fans and the wider football community have expressed their grief and paid tribute to the late forward on social media.
