The National Unity Platform (NUP) has officially selected lawyer Elias Luyimbazi Nalukoola as its candidate for the forthcoming Kawempe North parliamentary by-election.
Nalukoola triumphed in an internal party race, defeating nine other contenders. The selection process included a debate among the candidates last week, with hopefuls such as Umar Magala, Muhammad Lusswa Luwemba, Mathias Mulumba, Moses Nsereko, Salim Sserunkuuma, Fredrick Kakiika, Charles Rubagumya, Kenneth Ssekungu, and Saul Kulya Zziwa also participating.

In announcing the outcome, Ms. Mercy Walukaba, chairperson of NUP’s Election Management Committee (EMC), confirmed that Nalukoola secured the party’s endorsement with an impressive 71 percent of the vote.

The Kawempe North seat became vacant after the passing of MP Muhammad Ssegirinya, a member of NUP, last month.
With NUP’s official support, Nalukoola will now compete against candidates from other parties in the by-election, set for March 13.
