7 Famous Ugandan Athletes Who Have Won Medals

The following Ugandan Athletes have participated both  locally, Nationally and Internationally in most Athletic competitions which they have championed and here, we take you through.

1. Jacob Kiplimo 

Born on 14th November 2000, Jacob Kiplimo is a Ugandan long-distance runner and the current record holder in the half marathon.

Kiplimo won a bronze medal in the 10,000m at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and at the 2022 World Athletics Championships. He also secured gold medals in the 5000m and 10,000m events at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

In addition, Kiplimo won a silver and gold medal at the 2019 and 2023 World Cross Country Championships and was the winner of the 2020 World Half Marathon, making him one of the Ugandan athletes who have won global medals.

2. Joshua Cheptegei 

A Ugandan long distance runner, born on 12th September 1996, Joshua Cheptegei is the current world record holder for the 5000meters and 10,000meters who also holds the world’s best time over the 15kilometers distance.

3. Halimah Nakaayi 

Born on 16th October 1994, Halimah Nakaayi is a Ugandan middle distance runner who specializes in the 800meters and she is the 2019 World Champion event who also won a bronze medal at the 2022 World indoor Championships.

Halimah Nakaayi is the current Ugandan record holder for the 800meter both indoors and outdoors and the 1000meters too.

4. Davis Kamoga

A Ugandan Athlete competing in the 400meters. Davis Kamoga won the Bronze medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta Georgia.

He was born on 17th July 1968.

5. Stephen Kiprotich 

Born on 27th February 1989, Stephen Kiprotich is a Ugandan long-distance runner and Olympic marathon champion, having won the gold medal at the 2012 London Olympics.

Kiprotich also secured a gold medal at the 2013 World Championships in Athletics, cementing his place as one of the Ugandan athletes who have won global medals.

6. Dorcus Inzikuru

A Ugandan track and field Athlete. She won the inaugural world title in women’s 3000meters Steeplechase as well as the first commonwealth title in the event.

7. Solomon Mutai

Solomon Mutai is a Ugandan long-distance runner who began his career over shorter distances. At the 2009 Ugandan Championships, he placed ninth in the 1500 meters and fourth in the 3000 meters steeplechase.

He was also a runner-up at the National 5000 meters at the age of 18. As one of the Ugandan athletes who have won global medals, Mutai has showcased immense talent on the international stage.
