Police have confirmed the arrest of 29 supporters of the National Unity Platform (NUP) ahead of a planned campaign rally by party leader and presidential candidate Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, popularly known as Bobi Wine, in Mityana District.
According to a statement issued by Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) spokesperson Patrick Onyango, the arrests took place on Monday at Bujjuko Trading Centre.
A group of NUP supporters reportedly gathered along the Mityana highway, where they engaged in drumming, whistling, and blocking traffic as they awaited Bobi Wine’s motorcade.
“At Bujjuko Trading Centre along the Mityana highway, a group of NUP supporters gathered, drumming, whistling, and blocking the road, disrupting traffic flow and inciting unrest. Security personnel issued warnings, but the group persisted, leading to the arrest of about 29 suspects who are currently detained at Wakiso Police Division.”,police statement reads.
Although Bobi Wine was initially expected to use the Mityana highway, he later diverted to Homia Road. A joint security team had been deployed to facilitate the candidate’s safe movement.

Police have urged all presidential candidates to adhere to traffic regulations, follow approved campaign routes, and respect the rights of other road users during campaign activities.
