VJ Junior Announces Possible Retirement from Luganda Movie Translation

For years, the name Mary Smarts Matovu popularly  known as VJ Junior has been synonymous with English-to-Luganda movie translations in Uganda. His iconic voice, sharp wit, and captivating commentary have turned countless films into memorable experiences for local audiences.

Widely regarded as one of Uganda’s most beloved video jokers, VJ Junior may soon be stepping away from the microphone.

In a recent conversation with Daily Soup an entertainment show airing weekly on Spark TV, he revealed that retirement is no longer just a distant idea it could happen at any moment.

“Anytime. Even today, you might be shocked to find out that I’ve stopped translating movies,” he said.

According to VJ Junior, the decision to consider retirement is not driven by burnout or pressure, but by confidence in the solid financial groundwork he has laid over the years.

“I’ve made my investments, but I’m a private person. I don’t need to come out and say, ‘I have this, I’ve done that.’ That’s just not me.”he explained.

While he’s considering stepping back from translating, he made it clear he’s not saying goodbye to the film industry entirely.

“Leaving movie translation doesn’t mean I’m leaving the film world. I can still be active as a producer or director.”,he disclosed.

Addressing the concerns of up-and-coming video jokers who feel overshadowed by his enduring presence, VJ Junior offered reassurance and support.

“All I can ask of them is not to lose hope. Those who are coming up should rest assured, I will be retiring from translating movies very soon.”,he added.

He concluded with words of encouragement to the next generation, urging them to be bold in promoting their work just as he did when he was starting out.
