The Ugandan football community is in mourning following the sudden death of assistant referee Peter Kabugo, who collapsed while officiating a match on November 1, 2024, at Wankulukuku Stadium in Kampala.
He collapased during the 73rd minute of the game between SC Villa and UPDF and was rushed to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead later that evening.
The match began dramatically when UPDF’s Aggrey Kiirya accidentally scored an own goal just a minute into play, giving SC Villa an early advantage. The home team quickly took control, with Charles Lwanga shining as the standout player. Lwanga scored twice in the 11th and 15th minutes, leading SC Villa to a commanding 3-0 halftime lead.
He continued to dominate in the second half, completing a hat trick in the 51st minute and adding another goal in the 71st, making him the first player this season to score four goals in a single match.
The game concluded with SC Villa triumphing 5-0, lifting them to fourth place in the league standings with 11 points, while UPDF remains in ninth with nine points.
Despite the impressive performance, the match was overshadowed by the tragic news of Kabugo’s passing.
As the football community reflects on the loss of this dedicated official, SC Villa prepares for a crucial Kampala derby against rivals Express on November 8, while UPDF looks to regroup for their upcoming match against Mbarara City in Bombo on November 6.
