Busiro East Member of Parliament and veteran lawyer Medard Lubega Ssegona has broken his silence following the National Unity Platform’s (NUP) decision to deny him the party flag for the upcoming 2026 general elections.
In a decision that, while not entirely surprising, still caught the attention of many, NUP endorsed singer and outgoing Nsangi Town Council Mayor, Mathias Walukagga, as their official flag bearer for Busiro East.
Despite being one of the most respected figures in Parliament and a prominent member of NUP, Ssegona said he harbors no bitterness toward party president Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) or the party leadership.
Addressing speculation that he may have been sidelined due to his long tenure in Parliament, Ssegona firmly dismissed the claims.
“I don’t believe I was denied the ticket because I’ve been here too long others have served even longer. I won’t throw tantrums. Destruction is not in my DNA,” he stated.

Ssegona went on to suggest that perhaps he simply did not meet the criteria used during the party’s vetting process.
“I’m not bitter at anyone. Deep down, I’m at peace with the decision. I think I probably didn’t meet the requirements of their assessment. In fact, I believe some of the vetting team may not have known how to clearly communicate what they needed from me,” he added.
However, during a separate appearance on NBS TV, Ssegona made remarks that hinted at mild frustration. When asked whether he would consider running as an independent or continue working within the party structure, he noted that NUP had not offered him any formal role, implying he was open to standing independently.
“I’ve been in Parliament since 2011, and throughout that time, my biggest stakeholders have always been the people of Busiro East. In my first two terms, I was under the Democratic Party, and only in the last election did I join NUP,” he explained.
He emphasized that while the party has made its position known, the most important stakeholders his constituents have yet to weigh in on the matter.

“Only one stakeholder, the political party, has spoken. But the people of Busiro East, who matter most in this process, have not yet expressed dissatisfaction with my service,” he concluded.
