The National Resistance Movement (NRM) has selected Faridah Nambi, the daughter of Moses Kigongo, the party’s Vice National Chairperson, as its candidate for the upcoming Kawempe North by-election.
This makes Nambi the first official candidate declared for the race.
Faridah Nambi, who previously ran for the Kampala Woman MP seat in the 2021 general elections but lost to Shamim Malende of the National Unity Platform (NUP), replaces Tom Fisher Kasenge, who contested for the seat in 2021 under the NRM banner but was defeated by NUP’s Muhammad Ssegirinya.
Sources within the NRM suggest that Kasenge was asked to step aside for Nambi following a directive from President Museveni, who decided against holding primary elections for the position.
While the NRM has already confirmed its candidate, opposition parties are still in the process of selecting theirs. NUP, which has begun accepting applications for the Kawempe North seat, is expected to announce its candidate next Wednesday after completing the vetting process.
The Democratic Party (DP) has not yet revealed when it will make its announcement.
The Electoral Commission has scheduled the by-election for March 14, 2025, and the race is expected to be fiercely contested, as Kawempe North has traditionally been an opposition stronghold.
