No Second Term: MP Nyeko Withdraws from Makindye East Race

Makindye East Member of Parliament, Derrick Nyeko, has announced he will not contest in the 2026 general elections, bringing his parliamentary career to a close after serving just one term.

Nyeko, who was elected in 2021 on the National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket, made the announcement via a statement on his social media platforms, citing “deep reflection” as the basis for his decision.

“I have served with honour, respect, and a deep commitment never to betray the trust of those who voted for me,” he wrote, expressing gratitude to his supporters for their continued faith in him.

Acknowledging that the news may come as a disappointment to many who expected him to seek re-election, Nyeko reassured constituents that the decision does not erase the progress they’ve made together.

“This choice does not diminish the journey we have walked together, nor the victories we have achieved,” he said, calling on the people of Makindye East to remain united and committed to service.

Derrick emphasized that he was stepping away from politics with integrity. “I remain the man of no corruption, no problems,” he declared.

His decision comes amid mounting tensions within NUP over the allocation of parliamentary tickets for 2026. The party’s elections management committee has yet to release the list of vetted candidates, leaving many hopefuls including former NBS TV presenter Tuff B in limbo.

It is still unclear whether Nyeko’s withdrawal was motivated by personal considerations or a calculated move anticipating possible exclusion from the party’s final candidate list.
