The debate over Uganda’s top songwriters has been heating up, even leading to a public exchange between singers Dokta Brain and Daddy Andre.
In a recent interview, singer Joshua Baraka weighed in, sharing his personal list of exceptional songwriters, both past and present.
He named legendary figures like the late Mozey Radio, Elly Wamala, and Paulo Kafeero, as well as Maddox, Maurice Kirya, and Dokta Brain. He also acknowledged that many other talented songwriters exist.

When asked about Daddy Andre’s songwriting skills, Baraka admitted that while Andre is a songwriter, but he doesn’t consider his work exceptional.
“When we talk about memorable lyrics, depth, and storytelling, Andre does write good songs, but for me, I wouldn’t call his work exceptional,” Baraka explained.

He emphasized that his remarks weren’t meant to disrespect Andre but were simply his honest opinion.
“It’s not about disrespect. He’s an amazing artist and does his thing, but you asked for my best writers,” he clarified.
Baraka’s comments have sparked discussions among music fans about what defines great songwriting and how lyrics shape Uganda’s music industry.
