In a recent development, Mathias Mpuuga, the outgoing Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, has officially handed over the reins to Joel Ssenyonyi, the Member of Parliament for Nakawa East.

The transition was announced by Robert Kaygulanyi, also known as Bobi Wine, President of the National Unity Platform (NUP), in a communication made last December.

During the symbolic transfer of leadership on Wednesday, Mpuuga, who served two and a half years in the role, advised Joel Ssenyonyi to be vigilant against potential traitors within the opposition ranks in Parliament.

As the Member of Parliament for Nyendo-Mukungwe Division in Masaka City, Mpuuga pledged his support to Ssenyonyi, emphasizing the importance of maintaining a balanced approach in dealings with all opposition parties.

Ssenyonyi, in his new role, expressed his commitment to advocating for human rights and addressing the plight of political prisoners in Parliament.

He affirmed his willingness to collaborate with individuals across political affiliations.

This week, Speaker of Parliament Anita Among officially introduced Ssenyonyi as the new Leader of the Opposition, bidding farewell to Mpuuga.

Speaker Among emphasized her dedication to collaborative efforts with the opposition, fostering a spirit of unity within the parliamentary context.

“I commend Mpuuga for his commendable work, and I am committed to collaborating with anyone in the opposition,” declared Speaker Anita Among during a recent plenary session.
