After over 15 years with Next Media, Joe Kigozi has officially announced his departure, marking the end of an era for the Ugandan media giant.

His decision to step down in the final quarter of 2024 comes as he looks to explore new ventures outside the media industry.

Reflecting on his remarkable journey, Kigozi said, “My 15-year journey here has been an extraordinary adventure, filled with challenges, triumphs, and the constant inspiration of those around me. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunities and the chance to ignite a passion for growth in others. As I begin the next chapter, I carry with me the lessons learned and the enduring spirit of Next Media. Thank you for everything.”

Kigozi’s career at Next Media has been one of significant growth. He joined in 2008 as a sports presenter for the popular show ‘442,’ quickly rising through the ranks to hold pivotal leadership roles.

His journey saw him serve as Corporate Affairs Manager, Chief Marketing Officer, and Chief Strategy Officer. Kigozi briefly left in 2015 to lead BBS TV as CEO but returned in 2017, playing a key role in Next Media’s rapid growth and success.

Kigozi is widely credited for shaping the company’s commercial and brand strategies, which contributed to Next Media’s transformation into a multi-brand powerhouse. He is especially remembered for his leadership in the rebranding of NBS TV, transforming it from “Your True Source” to the iconic brand it is today. One of his significant achievements was overseeing NBS TV’s transition from analogue to digital broadcasting, which greatly expanded the station’s reach and influence.

During his tenure as Chief Strategy Officer from 2017, Kigozi was tasked with doubling Next Media’s revenue. Under his leadership, the company not only met but tripled its revenue targets. He also played a critical role in expanding the company’s portfolio from a single brand—NBS TV—to an impressive 17 brands.

Kigozi’s leadership extended beyond business growth to include major campaigns and initiatives. He led the successful ‘NBS Owakabi’ BTL campaign, which engaged over 100 artists over three years, and played a key role in the launch of ‘Sanyuka Naffe,’ an initiative that boosted Sanyuka TV’s position as one of Uganda’s leading entertainment brands.

His influence also reached sports broadcasting, where he was instrumental in making NBS Sport Uganda’s leading platform for sports coverage. Under his leadership, Sanyuka TV became the first indigenous broadcaster of the StarTimes Uganda Premier League in 2018, covering a record number of games and transforming the presentation of local football.

In addition to his work in broadcasting, Kigozi was behind some of Next Media’s landmark events and projects, including the Uganda Economic Forum, the Housing Baraza, the launch of Next Media Park, and the company’s 15-year celebration, which featured the highly successful UB40 concert. He also led the company’s involvement in the Uganda Cancer Run, raising awareness and funds for cancer treatment over seven years.

Inside Next Media, Kigozi also led key committees, such as the Disciplinary and Procurement Committees, ensuring operational excellence and ethical standards. His mentorship of young talent has been a central part of his legacy, with many current managers crediting him for shaping their careers.

As Kigozi prepares to leave, he leaves behind a well-structured and empowered team that will carry on his work. Many of his colleagues, including NBS TV’s Douglas Lwanga, have expressed gratitude for his mentorship and leadership. Lwanga tweeted, “Dear Joe Kigozi, thank you for your role and guidance in seeing people like me grow professionally. Thank you for the mentorship and always looking out for me. May your new journey bring even greater opportunities.”

While Kigozi is stepping away from an active role in media, he will continue to work with Next Media in a consultancy capacity, focusing on franchise model solutions. Though details about his next chapter are not fully disclosed, his colleagues are confident that he will continue to do transformative work.

“Joe has always been a go-getter, and whatever he does next, I have no doubt it will be groundbreaking,” said one senior executive.

As Next Media embarks on its next phase of growth, Joe Kigozi’s legacy is firmly etched in the company’s success story. His journey from sports presenter to Deputy Group CEO reflects his ambition, vision, and relentless drive, qualities that have helped shape Next Media into the influential company it is today.

Kigozi’s departure marks the end of an extraordinary chapter, and his impact will resonate within the company and the broader media industry for years to come.

To honor his contributions, Next Media will host a farewell event for Joe Kigozi on Friday, February 7, 2025, to celebrate his achievements and his remarkable influence on the company.
