Gen. Kayihura Appointed to Key Role at Ibanda University

Former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Gen. Kale Kayihura, has been appointed Chairperson of the Planning and Development Committee on the Ibanda University Governing Council.

The announcement was made during the official inauguration of the new university council held on Monday at AK Gardens Hotel in Ibanda Town.

The council is tasked with guiding the university’s strategic direction over the next four years.

Gen. Kayihura, who was relieved of his IGP duties in 2018, brings decades of experience in national leadership, security, and strategic planning.

According to university spokesperson Lawrence Mucunguzi, his expertise is expected to play a vital role in shaping both the physical infrastructure and academic progress of the institution.

“General Kayihura’s leadership and planning experience at the national level will be invaluable as the university continues to grow,” Mucunguzi said.

In his address, Gen. Kayihura expressed gratitude for the appointment and reaffirmed his commitment to the university’s development goals.

“I am honored to take on this role and contribute to an institution that is dedicated to academic excellence and transforming communities,” he said.

The Governing Council will be headed by Dr. Clementia Mureembe, who was re-elected as Chairperson. She emphasized a renewed focus on nurturing future leaders.

“This marks a fresh chapter of dedication and vision. Together, we will continue to grow a university that empowers generations,” Dr. Mureembe said.

Dr. John Busingye, Chairperson of the university’s Board of Directors, voiced confidence in the new council’s leadership.

“With Dr. Mureembe at the helm and Gen. Kayihura steering our development plans, we are poised to strengthen Ibanda University’s role as a center for academic excellence and innovation,” Busingye stated.

Other notable council members include Ms. Jovrine Kaliisa Kyomukama, Prof. Peter Kanyandago, Dr. Imelda Kemeza, and His Royal Highness Jude Mike Mudoma—Umukuuka III of Bugisu.

Founded in 2014, Ibanda University is one of Uganda’s rapidly growing private universities, recognized for its commitment to accessible, innovative, and community-driven education.
