Political commentator and businessman Frank Gashumba has accused the National Unity Platform (NUP) of turning its candidate vetting process into a money-making scheme. Speaking during an appearance on Radio 4,
Gashumba claimed that senior party officials at the NUP headquarters in Makerere Kavule are profiting from the selection process.
Drawing comparisons with the recent NRM Central Executive Committee (CEC) elections held in Kololo, Gashumba argued that while the ruling party was dealing in billions of shillings, NUP was engaging in similar practices on a smaller scale, allegedly involving millions.
“The process of selecting candidates in NUP has not been fair or transparent—it’s just another business venture, NRM was distributing billions in Kololo, and now NUP is collecting millions.”,Gashumba said.

To support his claims, Gashumba revealed that he financially supported two aspiring candidates within NUP, both of whom were successfully vetted and awarded party tickets.
“One of them was running for a Lord Councillor seat in Kampala. He told me he had been asked to pay 5 million shillings but only had 4 million. I gave him the remaining 1 million,” Gashumba explained.

In a further controversial statement, Gashumba expressed hope that President Museveni remains in power for more years, arguing that NUP leader Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu (Bobi Wine) would make an even worse leader.
