Eddy Kenzo has openly criticized Bobi Wine, the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), for his political involvement, claiming that it has significantly contributed to the difficulties faced by Uganda’s music industry.
In a New Year’s Eve interview at the Sheraton, Kenzo voiced his frustration over Bobi Wine’s consistent criticisms of artists who accept government support, calling them “beggars.” Kenzo found these remarks disrespectful and inappropriate for a leader, urging Bobi Wine to reassess his stance.
“He has become a major issue for our industry. All the challenges we are facing today stem from the moment he decided to join politics. That’s when the government started putting pressure on us, leading to our struggles.”kenzo said.
The singer argued that Bobi Wine’s political career has created a rift between artists and the government, making life harder for musicians. While Kenzo is dedicated to fostering communication with authorities to improve the situation, he accused Bobi Wine of damaging the reputation of artists in the process.
“If he truly cared about us, his actions would show it,” Kenzo said. “But every time he addresses the media, he refers to artists as beggars. Is this how a leader should talk? Is this how he speaks to his children or those he loves?”Kenzo said.
Kenzo, known for avoiding public disputes, emphasized that he could not stay silent when the integrity of the music industry he values was being undermined for personal gain.
“I prefer to mind my own business, but I cannot ignore when someone is harming our reputation for their own interests,” he stated.
